Darlingtonia Botanical Wayside
Wetland boardwalk trail to view native carnivorous cobra lilies
Located near Florence, Oregon, the Darlingtonia Botanical Wayside, a small state-managed site just north of Florence, offers a unique opportunity to observe a rare botanical specimen in its natural habitat. The site is centered around the California pitcher plant, Darlingtonia californica, also known as the cobra lily. This carnivorous plant is a carnivorous pitcher plant native to Oregon and California, making the site botanically significant.
Visitors can access the plant via a boardwalk trail that leads through the surrounding wetland to the edge of the fen. From the boardwalk, observers can view the distinctive hollow tubes of the cobra lilies, which can reach heights of about three feet. The plant’s unique structure, featuring a hooded top and downward-pointing hairs, is designed to trap insects, which are then digested to provide the plant with essential nutrients.
The site is open to the public, offering a quiet and educational experience for nature enthusiasts. The boardwalk allows visitors to view the plants without disturbing the fragile ecosystem or the surrounding sphagnum moss habitat. This accessible approach ensures that the unique botanical features can be appreciated by a wide range of visitors. The site serves as an important conservation area, protecting the rare Darlingtonia species and its specific ecological requirements.
