Crater Lake
Deepest lake in the United States
History: A Geological Marvel
Crater Lake National Park, established in 1902, is the fifth national park in the United States and the only one in the state. Its formation is a dramatic geological event; approximately 7,700 years ago, the volcano Mount Mazama collapsed after a massive eruption, creating a caldera. Over time, rain and snowmelt filled this crater, creating the deep, clear lake that exists today. The lake’s depth, reaching 1,943 feet, makes it the deepest in the United States. The park’s history is also marked by its early preservation, as it was one of the first areas in the West to be protected for its natural beauty. The clear, blue waters are a result of the lake’s depth and the lack of inflowing streams, which keeps the water exceptionally clear and free of algae.
Main Attractions: Rim Drive and Wizard Island
The primary attraction is the 33-mile Rim Drive, which circles the lake and offers panoramic views of the caldera. The drive is open from July to mid-October, depending on snow conditions. Along the way, visitors can see Wizard Island, a volcanic cinder cone that rises 700 feet above the lake’s surface. The island is a popular destination for boat tours, which depart from the Cleetwood Cove trailhead. The boat ride offers a unique perspective of the lake’s depth and the surrounding cliffs. The park also features several hiking trails, including the Plaikni Falls Trail, which leads to a waterfall in a hidden canyon. These attractions provide a diverse range of experiences, from relaxing lake views to active hiking.
Activities: Hiking and Boating
Visitors to Crater Lake can engage in a variety of activities, with hiking being the most popular. The park offers numerous trails, ranging from easy walks to more strenuous hikes. The Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only legal access to the lake shore, a steep 2.2-mile round trip. Once at the shore, visitors can swim in the cold, clear water, although the temperature is typically around 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit. The park also offers boat tours, which provide a different perspective of the lake and its surroundings. These tours are popular and often sell out, so advance booking is recommended.
Getting There: Access and Logistics
Crater Lake is located in southern Oregon, approximately 80 miles from Medford and 90 miles from Bend. The most common route is via Highway 62, which leads to the south entrance. The drive from Medford takes about 1.5 hours. The north entrance, reached via Highway 138, is usually closed by snow from late autumn into early summer. Visitors should check road conditions before traveling. The park has limited cell phone reception, so it is advisable to download maps and information in advance.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Crater Lake is during the summer months, from July to September. During this time, the weather is warm and dry, and all roads and trails are open. The summer months are also the most popular, so visitors should expect larger crowds. The shoulder seasons of May, June, and October offer a quieter experience, but some roads and facilities may be closed due to snow. Winter visitors can enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, but access is limited and conditions can be challenging.
Best Time to Visit
July through September offers the best weather with clear skies and full access to all park roads.
