Phantom Ship

Dark jagged volcanic islet resembling a sailing ship

9.2/10
#9 of 9 in Crater Lake

Located in Crater Lake National Park, the Phantom Ship is a striking natural rock formation situated in the southeastern part of the lake. This islet, composed of dark, jagged rock, resembles a sailing ship, giving the formation its name. The rock is a remnant of the ancient volcanic activity that formed the caldera, specifically a spur that was left behind as the surrounding cliffs eroded.

Visitors can view the Phantom Ship from several vantage points along the rim, including Sun Notch and the Phantom Ship Overlook on Rim Drive. The formation is particularly striking when viewed from the water, where it appears to sail across the deep blue lake. To experience the view up close, visitors can hike the Cleetwood Cove Trail, a steep 2.2-mile round trip that descends about 700 feet to the lake shore. From the shore, the Phantom Ship is visible as a distinct silhouette against the water.

When boat tours operate, they offer a closer look at the islet and the surrounding cliffs. The Phantom Ship is a popular subject for photography, with its unique shape and dark color contrasting sharply with the bright blue water and sky. The formation is a key feature of the Crater Lake landscape, offering a memorable visual experience for visitors.
