Cleetwood Cove Trail
Strenuous 1.1 mile trail to Crater Lake's north shore
Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only legal way to reach the shore of Crater Lake. The trail descends about 700 feet over 1.1 miles to a rocky landing on the lake's north side, and the climb back up makes it a strenuous hike of roughly 2.2 miles round trip. Wear sturdy shoes and carry water, as there are no facilities along the path.
At the bottom, visitors can swim in the lake's clear, very cold water, and the dock is where the park's boat tours depart. Swimming and boat tours are summer activities, and the trail is usually snow-free from late June or early July into early October.
The trail is popular, so start early on summer days. Pets are not allowed on the trail or at the lake. Trail closures and rehabilitation work do occur, so check the National Park Service for current status before planning a visit.
