Watchman Peak
Western rim summit with panoramic views of Crater Lake and Wizard Island
Rising 8,013 feet above sea level, Watchman Peak offers one of the most spectacular vantage points in Crater Lake National Park. Located on the western rim, the peak provides a unique perspective of the caldera, with views extending east toward the deep blue waters of Crater Lake and south toward the Klamath Basin. The trail to the summit is a moderate 1.8-mile round trip with a gradual elevation gain, making it accessible to hikers of varying abilities.
The trail begins near the Watchman Campground and winds through a forest of lodgepole pine and mountain hemlock. As hikers ascend, the dense forest gradually opens up, revealing sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. The summit offers a 360-degree panorama, including views of Wizard Island, the Klamath Basin, and the distant Cascade Range. The trail is particularly popular at sunrise and sunset, when the changing light enhances the dramatic colors of the landscape.
Historically, the trail was developed in the early 20th century to accommodate the growing number of visitors to the park. A fire lookout was once located at the summit, adding to the site’s historical significance. Today, the trail remains a popular destination for hikers seeking both physical challenge and breathtaking views. Visitors should be prepared for variable weather conditions, as the high elevation can bring sudden changes in temperature and weather. It is recommended to start early in the day to avoid crowds and to ensure a safe return before dusk.
