Eagle Creek Trail
Challenging 12-mile hike through Columbia River Gorge with dramatic waterfall views
Located in the Columbia River Gorge, the Eagle Creek Trail offers a challenging and scenic hiking experience. The trail, which spans approximately 12 miles round-trip, is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and features a significant elevation gain of 1,640 feet. The route is known for its dramatic scenery, including the iconic Tunnel Falls, a 172-foot waterfall with a tunnel carved behind it, as well as other notable features like Punch Bowl Falls.
The trail is considered difficult, with narrow sections and steep drop-offs that require caution. Hikers are advised to hold onto safety cables provided along certain cliff sections. Due to the terrain, the trail is not recommended for young children. A recreation pass is required for parking, and dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet. The trail enters the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness, where specific regulations apply.
The trail was heavily damaged by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire and was closed for several years before reopening; burn scars remain visible, and the trail remains a popular destination. The hike offers a mix of forested areas and open views, providing a diverse experience for hikers. It is important to check current trail conditions and fire restrictions before visiting, as conditions can change. The trail is a popular choice for experienced hikers seeking a challenging and rewarding experience in the Pacific Northwest.
