Hug Point State Recreation Site
Sandstone caves, tide pools, and a small waterfall on the Cannon Beach coast
Located just south of Cannon Beach, the Hug Point State Recreation Site offers a serene coastal experience. The site is named for the way early travelers had to hug the base of the headland to get around it at low tide. Stagecoaches once used a road blasted into the sandstone, and the carved roadbed is still visible. A short path from the parking area leads down to the beach and a small waterfall that spills onto the sand.
The area is known for its unique geological features, including sandstone caves and tide pools that are accessible at low tide. The surrounding forest, composed of ferns, salal, and other native vegetation, provides a lush backdrop. Visitors are advised to check tide schedules before visiting, as the area can become inaccessible during high tide. The site is a day-use area with no parking fee.
The Hug Point site is a popular destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat along the Oregon coast. Restrooms and picnic tables are available near the parking area. The natural beauty of the area, combined with the historical context, provides a unique and memorable experience for visitors.
