Forest Park
5200 acre urban forest with 80 miles of trails in Portland
Located in the Tualatin Mountains, Forest Park is one of the largest urban forests in the United States, covering approximately 5,200 acres. Established as a public park in 1948, it offers a significant natural refuge within the city limits of Portland. The park is home to diverse ecosystems, including old-growth and second-growth forests, and supports a wide variety of wildlife, including over 100 species of birds.
Visitors can explore more than 80 miles of trails, ranging from easy strolls to more challenging hikes. The Wildwood Trail is a popular route that connects various parts of the park. Access is available through more than 40 entry points, though parking is limited and often requires a short walk from the trailhead. Accessible parking is available at specific locations, such as the Lower Macleay and Wildwood/Pittock Mansion Trailheads.
The park is open to the public, but visitors should check current trail conditions and closures before visiting. Safety is a priority, and users are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings. The Forest Park Conservancy works to preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of the area. This urban oasis provides a unique opportunity for residents and tourists to experience nature without leaving the city, offering a peaceful retreat from the urban environment.
