International Rose Test Garden
Oldest public rose test garden in the United States featuring over 600 varieties
Located in Portland’s Washington Park, the International Rose Test Garden is the oldest continuously operating public rose test garden in the United States. Established in 1917, the garden serves as a vital testing ground for new rose varieties, with approximately 10 to 20 new types introduced annually. Most of these roses are eventually made available for commercial purchase, allowing visitors to see the future of horticulture firsthand.
The garden covers 6.90 acres and features over 10,000 rose bushes representing more than 600 varieties. Blooms typically appear from April through October, with peak flowering occurring in June. Visitors can explore specialized collections, including the Shakespeare Garden, the Gold Medal Garden, and the Miniature Rose Garden. These areas showcase roses evaluated for specific traits such as disease resistance, color, and fragrance.
The site is free to enter and attracts an estimated 700,000 visitors annually, contributing significantly to Portland’s reputation as the "City of Roses." While admission is complimentary, parking in Washington Park requires payment via the "Pay to Park" system or a mobile app. Public transit and shuttle options are available through Explore Washington Park, offering convenient access for those not driving. The garden is managed by Portland Parks & Recreation and the Portland Rose Society, which also offers educational programs. This historic site provides a serene and colorful experience, reflecting the deep cultural connection between the city and its floral heritage.
