Lan Su Chinese Garden
Walled classical Chinese garden with Taihu rock formations and pavilions in Portland
Located in Portland’s Chinatown/Old Town neighborhood, the Lan Su Chinese Garden is a walled classical Chinese garden that offers a serene escape from the urban environment. Covering approximately 40,000 square feet, the garden was designed by Kuang Zhen and built by a team of about 65 artisans from Suzhou, China, and opened in 2000. It follows the tradition of gardens in Suzhou, where Portland became a sister city in 1988.
Visitors can explore the garden’s intricate design, which includes traditional elements such as Taihu rock formations, pavilions, and water features. The garden is operated by a non-profit group and is accessible via public transit at the Old Town/Chinatown stop. Admission is required, and tickets can be purchased online or at the gate.
The garden hosts various cultural events and workshops throughout the year, including the Chrysanthemum Festival in November and tea tasting sessions. These activities provide opportunities to engage with Chinese culture and traditions. The Lan Su Chinese Garden serves as a peaceful retreat, offering visitors a chance to appreciate the beauty and history of classical Chinese garden design.
