Oregon Shakespeare Festival
Oldest US professional repertory theater with three venues in Ashland
The Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland is one of the oldest and largest professional repertory theaters in the United States. It was founded in 1935 by Angus Bowmer, and it now stages plays from early spring through October, mixing Shakespeare with classics, musicals and new work.
The campus has three main theaters: the indoor Angus Bowmer Theatre, the smaller Thomas Theatre and the outdoor Allen Elizabethan Theatre, which holds about 1,200 people and operates in the summer and early autumn. The theaters sit beside Lithia Park and the Ashland Plaza, so a visit can easily include a walk through the park before or after a show.
Backstage tours are offered during the season. Ticket prices and schedules change each year, so check the festival's website before planning a visit.
