Three Sisters Wilderness
Vast rugged Cascade Range wilderness with three volcanic peaks and alpine lakes
Located in the Cascade Range, the Three Sisters Wilderness is a vast and rugged natural area centered around three prominent volcanic peaks: North, Middle, and South Sister. The South Sister, standing at 10,358 feet, is the highest point in the area. The wilderness is characterized by its diverse landscapes, including alpine meadows, ancient lava fields, and hundreds of alpine lakes, such as the popular Green Lake.
Visitors can explore the area via an extensive network of hiking trails, including the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs through the region. The terrain offers a range of hiking experiences, from easy walks along the shores of alpine lakes to more strenuous climbs up the volcanic peaks. The area is home to diverse wildlife, including marmots, pikas, and various bird species, as well as black bears and elk.
The wilderness is accessible from many trailheads; Highway 242 crosses the northern edge via McKenzie Pass, and a wilderness permit is required for overnight and day use in peak season. Several trailheads provide access to the interior, including the McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass area. The region is open year-round, though winter conditions can be severe, with deep snow and cold temperatures. Summer is the most popular time for hiking, camping, and fishing, with the clear alpine lakes offering opportunities for swimming and fishing. Visitors are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the fragile alpine environment.
