Alton Baker Park
Willamette River park with developed amenities and rugged natural areas
Located along the Willamette River, Alton Baker Park is Eugene’s largest developed park, offering a diverse range of recreational opportunities. The park is divided into two main sections: a developed western area and the 237-acre Whilamut Natural Area to the east. This division allows visitors to choose between structured amenities and immersive nature experiences.
The western section features well-maintained paths, picnic areas, and sports facilities, including a disc golf course and a BMX track. The Frohnmayer Footbridge connects the park to the University of Oregon, providing a popular route for walkers and runners. The area is known for its accessibility and is a popular spot for community events and casual exercise.
The eastern Whilamut Natural Area offers a more rugged experience, with trails winding through forests and wetlands. This area is home to diverse wildlife, including birds like the Great Blue Heron and Canada goose. The park honors the local Kalapuya people through "Talking Stones" that display words in their language, adding a cultural layer to the natural landscape.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, from jogging and biking to bird watching and picnicking. The park is open year-round, and there is no admission fee. The combination of natural beauty and accessible amenities makes Alton Baker Park a popular destination for both locals and visitors seeking outdoor recreation.
