Astoria Column
125-foot historic monument with panoramic Columbia River views
Located in Astoria, Oregon, the Astoria Column is a 125-foot-tall monument atop Coxcomb Hill that offers panoramic views of the Columbia River and the surrounding area. Built in 1926, the structure serves as a historic landmark and a popular destination for visitors. Visitors can climb the 164-step spiral staircase to the top.
The climb to the top provides a unique physical challenge, but the reward is a 360-degree view of the Columbia River, the Pacific Ocean, and the surrounding landscape. The exterior is decorated with a spiral frieze painted in the sgraffito style that depicts the history of the Pacific Northwest. At the top, visitors can take in the expansive views of the Columbia River estuary, the city of Astoria, and the Coast Range.
The site is managed by the Friends of the Astoria Column, who maintain the grounds and the gift shop. A gift shop at the base of the column sells souvenirs. Parking is available on-site, with a fee applicable for vehicles. The Astoria Column is a significant landmark, offering both a physical challenge and a visual reward, making it a key destination for travelers exploring the region.
