Columbia River Maritime Museum
Historic Astoria maritime museum with interactive exhibits and historic lightship
Located in Astoria, Oregon, the Columbia River Maritime Museum offers a comprehensive look at the region’s rich nautical history. The museum preserves the legacy of the "Graveyard of the Pacific," a stretch of coastline known for its treacherous conditions, and details the evolution of navigation, fishing, and shipbuilding from 1792 to the present. Visitors can explore exhibits on the dangers of the Columbia River Bar, where waves can exceed 40 feet, and learn about the critical role of river bar pilots and the U.S. Coast Guard in rescue operations.
A major highlight is the historic Lightship Columbia (WLV-604), a floating lighthouse that visitors can board. Access to the ship is included with general admission, but guests must stop at the Admissions Desk first. The museum also features interactive displays regarding the Lewis and Clark Expedition’s arrival at the Pacific and exhibits on Pacific Northwest Indigenous maritime culture. Additional attractions include a 3D Theater, a Warnock Model Boat Pond, and a reference library.
The museum is open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The Lightship Columbia exhibit operates separately from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The facility offers waterfront views overlooking the shipping channel. The museum provides a valuable educational experience for those interested in maritime heritage, combining historical artifacts with engaging programming for all ages.
