Lava River Cave
Oregon's longest lava tube in Deschutes National Forest
Located in the Deschutes National Forest, Lava River Cave is a significant geological site featuring the longest continuous lava tube in Oregon, about a mile long. The cave is formed by the flow of lava from the Newberry Volcano, creating a unique underground environment. During the summer season, visitors need a timed-entry reservation booked online, plus a valid recreation pass.
The cave itself is dark and cold, with temperatures remaining constant at approximately 42°F (5.5°C) year-round. Visitors are strongly advised to wear warm, layered clothing and sturdy, non-slip footwear. Flashlights are essential for navigation, as the interior is pitch black. The terrain inside is rugged, with uneven surfaces and steep stairs, requiring a moderate level of physical fitness.
Visitors must be cautious of white-nose syndrome, a disease affecting bats, and are required to clean their gear before entering to prevent the spread of the fungus. The cave offers a unique opportunity to experience the geological history of the region, with visible lava formations and cool, stable temperatures. It is important to note that the cave is closed during certain periods, so checking the current status and reservation availability is essential before planning a visit.
