Mount Hood Scenic Byway

Scenic loop through orchards and Mount Hood National Forest with year-round recreation

8.6/10
#7 of 8 in Hood River

The Mount Hood Scenic Byway follows Oregon Route 35 south from Hood River through the orchards of the Hood River Valley and up toward the flanks of Mount Hood, which rises 11,249 feet above sea level. It meets US Highway 26 near Government Camp, and together the two roads form a popular loop around the mountain.

Along the way visitors find fruit stands and farms, viewpoints of the mountain, trailheads in Mount Hood National Forest, and winter and summer recreation including skiing, hiking and camping. The Timberline Trail circles the mountain, and the Mount Hood Cultural Center & Museum in Government Camp has exhibits on the history of the area.

The byway is open year-round, though conditions can vary significantly with the seasons. In winter, the road can be covered in snow and traction devices may be required. Visitors should check weather and road conditions before traveling.
