Newberry National Volcanic Monument
54,000-acre shield volcano with caldera lakes, lava flows, and hiking trails
Newberry National Volcanic Monument is a 54,000-acre protected area south of Bend, centered on Newberry Volcano, a massive shield volcano with a collapsed summit caldera. The monument's features include lava flows, cinder cones and obsidian, plus two lakes in the caldera, Paulina Lake and East Lake.
The Big Obsidian Flow, a glassy lava flow about 1,300 years old, has an interpretive trail across it. Paulina Peak rises to nearly 8,000 feet on the caldera rim and has a viewpoint reached by a gravel road. Lava River Cave, Lava Butte and the Lava Lands Visitor Center, all off Highway 97, are part of the monument.
The caldera lakes offer swimming, boating and fishing in summer, and there are campgrounds and hiking trails. Snow closes the road to the caldera in winter, when the area is used for snowmobiling and Nordic skiing.
