Shore Acres State Park
Sandstone cliffs with formal, Japanese and rose gardens near Coos Bay
Shore Acres State Park sits on sandstone cliffs about 13 miles southwest of Coos Bay, on the site of the former estate of timber and shipping magnate Louis J. Simpson. The estate's gardens are the park's main attraction, with a formal garden, a Japanese-style garden and a rose garden, alongside rugged sea cliffs and a sheltered cove.
The park is also known for storm watching: winter swells crash against the cliffs, and an enclosed observation building lets visitors watch from shelter. Whale watching is possible from the headlands, especially during migration seasons.
Each December, the gardens are lit for a popular holiday light display. The park is open year-round, with a day-use fee per vehicle for the gardens.
